Åndalsnes

Åndalsnes is a charming small town surrounded by majestic mountains, the deep Romsdal Fjord and lush nature. The town is located at the innermost part of the Romsdal Fjord and at the lower end of the Romsdal Valley.  Åndalsnes is a natural starting point for spectacular nature experiences, whether it is hiking, ski touring, cycling tours, fjord cruises or peaceful moments along the waterfront.

In the middle of town, in a quiet side street, you will find Bakkebo. Just 300 metres from the train and bus, the gondola station and the Norwegian Mounteneering Centre. 

With iconic attractions like Trollstigen, Rampestreken and Romsdalseggen, Åndalsnes is a paradise for both seasoned mountain enthusiasts and curious first-time visitors. The town center offers cozy cafés, local shops and a vibrant atmosphere where nature and culture meet. Åndalsnes is easy to reach by car, boat, bus and train, and serves as a hub for adventures throughout the Romsdal region. The town combines small-town charm with majestic scenery, creating unforgettable experiences in every season.

Trollstigen

Trollstigen is one of Norway’s most iconic tourist roads, known for its dramatic 11 gigant hairpin bends, sheer mountainsides, and powerful waterfalls that thunder down along the cliffs. The road winds its way up through a magnificent landscape where the forces of nature truly reveal themselves at their most impressive. The road is closed in winter.

Along Trollstigen road, there are majestic peaks such as Kongen -  the King, Dronningen -  the Queen, and Bispen -  the Bishop, and waterfalls plunging down from the mountain tops. Visitors can also stop by the modern visitor centre located at the top of the road.

The area around Trollstigen offers excellent hiking opportunities, picnic spots, and nature experiences for both families and experienced mountain hikers. Trollstigen is the starting point for many spectacular mountain hikes, with Trollveggen and Stabbeskaret among the highlights. With its combination of engineering achievement and raw nature, Trollstigen is a destination that creates memories for life and provides a unique insight into the very best of Norwegian mountain scenery.

Romsdalseggen

Romsdalseggen is one of Norway’s most spectacular hikes, and is ideal for those who enjoy airy heights and unforgettable views. Along the ridge there is a panoramic view of well-known peaks such as Trollveggen, Romsdalshorn and the Vengetindene, you can look down on the Rauma Railway as it winds its way along the River Rauma, and down to the charming mountain town of Åndalsnes. There is a view towards the Romsdal Fjord and towards Molde, and the Atlantic Ocean lying furthest out. 

Romsdalseggen hike is dramatic landscapes, open horizons and constantly changing views.

Rauma Rail Line

A historic journey through Norway’s wildest nature

The Rauma Line is one of Norway’s most spectacular railway lines,  dramatic scenery, rich history, and unique travel experience. The railway runs between Dombås and Åndalsnes, following the wild and beautiful Romsdalen valley, with sheer mountains, deep ravines, and roaring waterfalls and rivers as its natural companions along the way. 

If staying at Bakkebo, it is just 300 metres to Åndalsnes Railway Station, which is the starting point - or end -  of the Rauma Line.
